It's been a few weeks since he last saw her. The first one, he spent making up for not being able to drink the week before. The few after that - well. He's well aware that their last conversation didn't go too well. It seemed sensible to steer clear, and he wasn't all that happy with her either, was he?

But the awkwardness of the thing with Guppy has ebbed away a bit now, and he's been wondering what she's up to. Even if their last conversation was a bit crap, that's no reason not to see where they're at. So, in typical Gene Hunt style, he decides to take the bull by the horns. He still wants to go to Texas, and he still wants to see her. If that means another awkward conversation - well, so be it.

After checking she's not in the bar, and not in the stables, he heads up to her room. His knock is as bold as ever, no sign of nerves.

'You in there?'

Even after outright volunteering for this, it takes a while to talk himself into it. He supposes that, on some level, he was hoping he would make the offer, and she'd turn around and say she wasn't serious, or she was only trying to make a point or something. Anything that'd let him off the hook.

But no. She'd gone and got all grateful, and pleased about it. So now he has to follow through. Although yeah, he's thought about not doing it and telling her he has. But that's a bit underhand for him and besides, he's pretty sure Guppy would tell on him.

So. He's strengthened his nerve with a few stiff doubles, told himself to stop being a jessie, and reminded himself that there's potentially a really good payoff for going through with this. And so here he is, striding into the infirmary as if he owns the place.

'DOC!'

He's got to be around somewhere. He's never bloody anywhere else.

He doesn't drag his feet on the way down to the stables, though he's still not sure this is a good idea. But, fact is, much as he's tried to ignore the last row, it won't go away. He's told himself he doesn't care until he's blue in the face, but he's called himself a liar too. And yeah, he was really angry and he's still pissed off when he thinks about it. But he's not as pissed off as he was, and there's a lot he doesn't understand.

Gene doesn't like not understanding things. And he has no intention of hiding away from her either. When he has a problem, he either buries it until it goes away (doesn't seem to be working), or he faces it head on. Seeing as the first option seems to be a non-starter, the second it is.

So there's no trepidation as he walks into the building. None of his usual striding arrogance either though.

'You in here?'
the_gene_genie: (Ashes - Looking Over)
She's been looking antsy about this. And if he's being honest with himself, which he is, then he can kind of see why. Shaz is in there, meeting a murderer, and they're enough of a distance away that things could happen without them being able to get inside in time. Under normal circumstances, there's no way he'd let this happen.

But it isn't normal circumstances. They're trying to catch a serial killer. On top of that...well. There are things on top of that. But all that aside, he doesn't want her doubts rubbing off on the rest of the team. They're nervous enough, especially Chris. They have to present a united front on this. So he holds her back as the boys climb into the back of the van.

'Brew, lads?'

'Nice one, Guv.'

He jerks his head at Alex.

'C'mon, Bols. You can help me carry 'em.'

It's been a trying few days, no doubt about it. And he's pretty damn sure they haven't seen the end of it. But it doesn't matter tonight. Tonight is about celebrating a job well done, and the person who did it. Whatever else is going on, this evening belongs to Shaz.

He marches into Luigi's with force. Everyone's happy, the music's loud, the drink is flowing. He has a knot in his stomach, but he ignores it. She did what she had to do, now he's doing what he has to do.

She looks small, standing in the kitchen, with her hands in held in front of her. She looks like her nerve has really gone.

He wasn't at all keen on this dating agency idea when she suggested it. Seems a bit dodgy to him - for one thing, dating agencies are for tossers. For another, it's quite likely that a murderer is prowling around this one. And lastly, he doesn't really want her going on dates with any of them. Even the ones who are not murderers. Especially not them, really. She'd be more likely to see them again.

But there is more to it than that, of course. He doesn't like putting any of his team at unnecessary risk, and this seems like it's inviting it. Potentially meeting a killer in his arena, on his hunting ground, rather than on their terms. She's probably right though; it'll cause a proper ruckus if they go around interviewing all the blokes registered there, and might scare the murderer off. He's not having that. Not after what happened to all those women. So he does the only thing he can to keep her safe; he gets in there and takes one for the team.

Which is why they're in his office, with an application form each, and he's pouring them a drink. Everyone else has gone, except Shaz.

This is more how it used to be. He likes it.

He's glad when she rides them out of town, away from where anyone might see this. It makes sense, of course. It'd be a bit stupid for her to be teaching him how to do this stuff in full view of the people who think he already knows how.

It feels weird to be back in the saddle after a few days out of it, though. Hurts, too. He'd thought these aches were going away but nope, they were only asleep. So it's a bit of an uncomfortable ride, especially coupled with the heat. He doesn't moan though. He'll be in trouble if she changes her mind about helping him here.

Even by 70s standards, this place is basic. But it looks brilliant to him, because it's real - proper, authentic Old West chairs, and tables; wooden floor and burning candles, and the smell of the desert right outside the door. It'll do him. Anything else just wouldn't be the same.

They're shown to a table and he makes sure to sit opposite her. All very proper. There doesn't seem to be too many other people here, which is good, because he hasn't yet worked out what counts as inappropriate for her, and it'd be all too easy for him to open his big trap and say the wrong thing. All too easy to mess this up, and get her into trouble.

As soon as a waiter comes near, he says, 'Whiskey. Double, no ice. Two of 'em.'

The food can wait until after.

It's been a long old day, no matter what way he looks at it. For a start, getting back on the horse was one of the most painful things he's ever had to do, and it didn't ease once he was up there. If anything, it's worse now. Subjecting hurt muscles to the same thing that hurt them in the first place, and doing it for hours on end, is not his idea of a good time.

For second, they've barely said a word to each other all day. He can't figure it out. She doesn't seem angry, like she was this morning. She doesn't seem sour; she's not cutting him down when he does speak. She's just...not talking. After a couple of hours of it, he decided that probably meant she was done with him - somehow, figuring this out has not made his mood better. He usually likes figuring out where he stands, but this one brings no satisfaction. And he keeps expecting her to bring it up again, like women usually do, but so far, nothing.

So it's been an awkward day. It's been an awkward, bloody hot day, with not enough alcohol in it. But the vista has been as glorious as ever - he's kept his eyes firmly on the area they're riding through. It's been changing, he's noticed. Greener, for a start. Different sorts of animals, more trees. He assumes this is what she wants, and doesn't ask any of the questions that have been threatening to spill for a while now.
