He's already speaking in the past tense.




She wants to shout at him, we never found our stride. They could have been brilliant together, she thinks, if they could have just sorted themselves out. But no. He can't have her being a 'hindrance'. That part -- she'll never live that down.



In a heartbeat, she's lost the two things that mean the most to her: Molly. And now him.



She can only nod, stunned by the weight of the truth. She remembers that hillside in Lancashire, and remembers the cool earth between her fingers. They're still in her pocket, his warrant card and his epaulette numbers. She fumbles for the latter, holding them out to him.

'Here.'
