Name:DCI Gene Hunt
Location:Manchester, United Kingdom
Sam:"You're an overweight, over-the-hill, nicotine-stained, borderline-alcoholic homophobe with a superiority complex and an unhealthy obsession with male bonding."

Gene:"...you make that sound like a bad thing."

"This is why birds and CID don't mix. You give a bloke a gun, it's a dream come true. You give a girl one and she moans it doesn't go with her dress!"

Meet Gene...

OOC: Gene is, to put it mildly, not a very PC kind of bloke. He tends to say exactly what he thinks, to anyone, at any time and bugger the consequences - perhaps the reason for this is that he's the Guv, the Sheriff, CID is his Kingdom and consequences tend to be things he deals out, rather than receives. As DCI (Detective Chief Inspector), his word is law - in the office and on the streets.

All this, in the English police force in 1973, is perfectly acceptable behaviour. It was more rare to find a straight copper than one on the take, there were few rules with how people in custody should be treated and sexism, racism and homophobia were a given in that male-dominated world. Gene Hunt displays all these traits with an almost obscene glee...and yet, people love him. His team worship the ground he walks on. He'll think nothing of beating a confession out of someone, planting evidence is de rigeur but as he says himself, he's 'never fitted anyone up who didn't deserve it.' He'll break practically every law in order to uphold the law because if there's one thing Gene Hunt hates, it's scum running rife in his city. And say what you like about him, he gets results.

You couldn't say he's a man that embraces change easily; he likes doing thing his way and puts up a lot of resistance when Sam Tyler shows up with his modern ways of policing. But don't make the mistake of thinking he's stupid; he's extremely smart, adapts when he sees that new methods catch more criminals and while he prefers to act on gut instinct alone, he'll give fresh ideas a chance if it looks like they might work. And while he is, in many ways, a dyed-in-the-wool neanderthal there are instances where he can be more charming that you would have thought possible. In Ashes to Ashes, he displays tendencies that can only be described as gentlemanly at times. Despite threatening kids that they'd better behave or he'll 'come round your house and stamp on all your toys,' he'll move heaven and earth to save a kid - or woman, and sometimes man - who needs help.

Doesn't mean he won't shoot a dog on the way though.

He's famous for his colourful insults that are delivered so often, and with (generally) such enjoyment that they're hardly offensive to those who know him. It's just part of who he is and you know you're in trouble when he stops calling you a 'great soft, girlie, French, bender, Man Utd supporting poof!' drops your nickname and actually addresses you by the name your mother gave you. And if Gene is angry with you? You definitely bloody know about it. Violence is second nature to him, as is it to all the coppers of the day and he'll hit a mate just as easily as a scumbag. Difference is, if you're a mate he'll buy you a pint and have a game of darts with you afterwards.

He's just over six feet tall, with a Mancunian accent and dark blond hair. As he's coming into the bar from the 70's, he'll always be wearing a cheap suit, a tie with a bad design and usually a long, tan, camelhair overcoat. He smokes constantly and 'beer o clock' is his favourite time of day - he's a hell of a drinker. Bitter is his favourite (but only from Central Manchester) and the whiskey goes down a treat too. He's always carrying a hip flask or three, a Magnum .357 and is a big fan of Westerns.

And Roger Whitaker. But don't bring that up or he might be forced to shut your mouth for you.

Oh and incidentally - he might just be a figment of Sam Tyler's imagination. Or Alex Drake's. He might be real. He might be dead. But he's still the Guv and as Chris puts it, 'the Guv says we were put on this earth to catch bad people'. And that is what he does.

Gene will be entering the bar just prior to the events of Life on Mars so we can see him in all his non-pc glory. He will also be going through Ashes to Ashes canon at some point where his bad habits have toned down a bit. As for the changes in character over that time...well, I'll keep you posted. As I write this, we are five eps away from the Ashes to Ashes revelation of who/what/in what condition Gene really is so this bio is subject to change by the time he gets further along in canon.

Bio update: Canon is finished. And what a finish it was! It changes things for Gene quite dramatically but I don't want to post it here in case anyone doesn't want to be spoiled. Pertinent info can be found here - be warned **MAJOR SHOW SPOILERS** If you want to thread with him and your pup has no god-like or extra-sensory powers, then you don't need to read it. I recommend you just go get the DVD's instead. :D
