OOM: 2x08, iv. I Will Kill You.
The door slams. She followed and he knew she would. He hadn't wanted to lose it like that in front of everyone but he can't ignore his anger. And it's easier to be angry than to focus on the ache.
'First Sam Tyler, now you. Why do I always attract the liars an' the weirdos?'

"The bullion truck is scheduled for 11 o'clock tomorrow morning. Somehow it will be diverted to King Douglas Lane, now the clock is ticking, Guv. And we have to bring Summers down."

It had only been an idle thought, up until now. But after that display out there and her continued insistence to bang on about Summers...he can't hear it.
And the thought of seeing her every day, hearing her voice saying I have to get away from him...he just can't take it.
Besides, she's barking.

He's lost his mind.

And he's not listening to her lunacy any more.
'Me organ grinder, you monkey. Give.'
His hand shoots out and stays there, steady as a rock. He means it.

She slips her hand in the back pocket of her jeans and takes out her warrant card, slamming it down on his desk with a force and ferocity she didn't realise she felt until just now.

Gene's an honest man. And they did have something. Now that it's gone, it's easier to voice just what he thought it was.
'I really thought you an' me...'
That's it, really. He thought it was him and her. End of.
'...I thought we were the ones, we 'ad a connection.'
no subject
"We do."
She meets his gaze, wanting nothing more than to see that connection in his eyes just one last time before she has to leave him.
This feels worse than being shot.

'You can't tell me the truth.'
It's all he wants. Just for her to tell him the truth and they can forget all this nonsense and go back to how it was. It was just a few hours ago, that's all. They can pretend this never happened.

Her voice is barely more than a whisper.
"I know you can't possibly comprehend it, but I did."
I gave you everything you asked for. (His name is Gene.)

Before today, he'd never have thought that of her. But she pretended to care about him and all the time, was plotting ways of bringing him down behind his back. Her and her little tape machine. He appealed for the truth and she came up with something ludicrous and is now acting like he's in the wrong for not believing it. And he hadn't thought about it before but really, he should have known. He's not the only one she's been treating this way.
'You told me once you 'ad a daughter. You don' phone her. You never talk about her. You never try an' see her...'
no subject
She stares at him, shaking with rage, wondering if he knows how truly deeply he wounded her with those words, and then realising -- he doesn't care. (His name is Gene and today...)
She's lost him for good.
She whirls and storms out of his office.
no subject
'I'm doin' this without you!'
She's halfway across the office and they're all watching and he doesn't care.
'An' you dare t'get in my way, I swear to God, I will kill you.'
no subject
You may already have, she thinks.
And it still doesn't hurt as much as this. (His name is Gene and he is -- was my constant.)
She doesn't even answer his threat, just runs, not knowing where she's going or how she's going to get through the next twelve hours.
no subject
He can see the others looking at him too and...he shouldn't have said that. That was...he shouldn't have said it.
She's gone and they're gone, but he could never...
It doesn't matter.
It's over.
